Foam-Free Seattle

Working to ban polystyrene products in Seattle

Foam-Free Seattle's working mission statement:
Our goal is the elimination of disposable polystyrene products in the city of Seattle through advocacy and education.

What is Polystyrene?
"Polystyrene foam, a plastics product, is designed for a useful life of minutes or hours but continues to exist in our environment for hundreds or thousands of years...Biodegradable food service ware can be an affordable, safe, ecologically sound alternative to polystyrene foam and other disposable food service ware." – Jean Quan, Oakland City Council member

Join us at the kickoff meeting:
Monday, January 22, 2007
6:00 - 7:45 pm
Capitol Hill Library
425 Harvard Street
cross street is E. Republican

Agenda will include:
-Participant commitment to Foam-Free Seattle
-Local businesses that do not use polystyrene
-Strategy discussion
-Review of website/list serve and other communication tools
-Task assignments
-Expansion of outreach and public support
-Recruitment of people to attend meeting with city staff

Your involvement level:
You can be as involved as you are able. Right now we're looking to build the community of folks who care about this issue and figure out our next steps on how to make a polystyrene ban happen.

Here are some options for level of involvement:
1. Very involved. Will try to attend planning/strategy meetings (about once a month, in the evenings) and meet with city staff. On listserve.
2. Somewhat involved. Will try to attend big meetings such as public hearings, will try to send emails of support, etc. On listserve.
3. Interested but limited time. Just want to be on the listserve in order to track progress. Will occasionally send emails of support (at key moments).
4. Interested but don't want to be on listserve. On email list but not listserve (i.e., receiving emails only at key points when public support is needed).
5. Business supporter. My business does not generally use polystyrene products and we would like to be listed on the web page as a Foam-Free Business.

Please email Heather Trim at htrim@pugetsound.org to indicate your interest level. Please include your contact information (as much as you feel comfortable).
